Today\u2019s article is the first in a series that will highlight the most common stumbling blocks<sup>1<\/sup> for German-speaking learners of English:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cActually\u201d is actually the English word for <em>tats\u00e4chlich <\/em>or <em>eigentlich \u2013 <\/em>it never means <em>aktuell!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Die <u>aktuelle<\/u> Lage \/ die <u>aktuelle<\/u> Situation\u2026 <\/em>refers to the <u>present<\/u> or <u>current<\/u> situation in English, not the <span style=\"text-decoration:line-through;\">actual<\/span> situation. This is <em>tats\u00e4chlich <\/em>an extremely common error made by German speakers that can, <em>in der Tat<\/em>, lead to some very real confusion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Die <u>aktuelle<\/u> Vorgehensweise ist unpassend. -&gt; The <u>current<\/u> approach is unsuitable.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Die <u>tats\u00e4chliche<\/u> Vorgehensweise ist unpassend. -&gt; The <u>actual<\/u> approach is unsuitable.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEventually\u201d you\u2019ll comprehend that this word means <em>schlie\u00dflich, letztendlich <\/em>or <em>letzten Endes <\/em>\u2014 it never means <em>eventuell!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hearing something like, \u201cOur opponents put up a good fight, but our team <em>eventually<\/em> won the match,\u201d native\u00a0German speakers might still be in the dark<sup>2<\/sup> as to its\u00a0outcome. How does a team <em>maybe<\/em> win? Isn\u2019t that what photo finishes and referees are for? Think again: <em><u>eventuell<\/u><\/em> translates as \u201c<u>maybe \/ possibly \/ perhaps \/ might<\/u>\u201d, whereas the English <em>eventually<\/em>, as we see, means something quite different. It\u2019s a pitfall<sup>3<\/sup> that\u2019s difficult to avoid, but you\u2019ll eventually get the hang of it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Wir sind dann <u>schlie\u00dflich<\/u> -&gt; We<\/em> <em><u>eventually<\/u><\/em><em> went along.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Er kommt <u>eventuell<\/u> -&gt; He <u>might<\/u> come.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cActualize\u201d is actually a translation of <em>verwirklichen <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In \u201cactualizing\u201d your potential to master English, you don\u2019t necessarily need to update anything. That\u2019s because to <u>actualize<\/u> means <em><u>verwirklichen<\/u><\/em>, whereas <em><u>aktualisieren<\/u><\/em> is <u>to update <\/u>or <u>to refresh<\/u>. Actualize means \u201cto make actual\/realize\u201d im Sinne von \u201crealisieren\u201d. I recommend avoiding confusion altogether by using the word \u201crealize\u201d to convey this idea.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Du musst die Webseite <u>aktualisieren<\/u>. -&gt; You need to <u>refresh<\/u> the page.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Einige Jahre sind vergangen, bevor ein Gewinn <u>erzielt<\/u> -&gt; Several years passed before a profit was <u>realized<\/u>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With a bit of practice, you\u2019ll <em>eventually<\/em> be able to avoid these errors. Try the example translations below on for size. You might <em>actually<\/em> enjoy them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><em>Die ersten Entw\u00fcrfe des Architekten haben mich eigentlich entt\u00e4uscht. Ich fragte ihn h\u00f6flich, ob er die Pl\u00e4ne eventuell \u00fcberarbeiten konnte.
