Translation time! Gründonnerstag auf Englisch? Tbh I had no idea what it was called until I looked it up this morning... for English speakers: the origins of the German “green Thursday” are etymologically murky but one explanation is that it comes from the Latin dies viridium (day of the green) meaning the absolution of sins in the sense of renewal from Luke 23:31 (green wood). The more you know?
@stage_door_johnny on TikTok with the English plural realness - kein Wunder, dass man zwischendurch verwirrt ist! But German plurals are worse 😂

Do you Fußgruß or elbow-bump? This post is the first in a new series on pandemic-related German neologisms that have been documented by linguists. Learn German or English with me online! Link to my site in bio 💫 🇺🇸 🇩🇪 #learngerman #learnenglish #learnenglishonline #nativespeaker #neologisms #corona

So true! English orthography, unlike German orthography, is a terrible indicator of how words are actually pronounced. All the assimilation and elision that happens in native speech totally goes under (i.e. pronouncing bizness instead of bus-i-ness). I misspell English words all the time but almost never make a mistake in German (at least when it comes to spelling, sometimes I get noun gender and thus endings and articles wrong because when I started learning German I had no frame of reference for understanding how absolutely vital it is to learn noun gender as a German learner). Pacific Ocean! 🌊 C C C 💫 #englishpronunciation #learnenglish #englishforgermans #learngerman #languagelearning #linguistics #grammarnerd #languagelover
